Leading up to Mother’s Day this year, I did a little thinking about my feelings on the day……I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a silly holiday! I take the same stance with Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, Siblings Day, and other silly holidays that honor people we should honor EVERYDAY!
It hit me pretty hard this morning as the children (one in particular) were making life a little unpleasant. They had presented me with cards, given me big hugs and kisses, and even offered to make my breakfast and coffee. WOW, I thought, this is going to be a great day. Then it hit….we’ve been going nonstop this past week with dance recitals and ball games. The kids are beyond exhausted………. Child #3 did something that child #1 didn’t like. Child #1 decided it was a good day to push every single button (and find new ones) that Child #3 has. And then I said it…. “Kids, please! It’s Mother’s Day! Can you get through at least the morning without a fight? Why does it matter? Why today? Can’t we get along EVERYDAY?!?! I mean, don’t get me wrong, the fact that Child #2 and #3 have showered me with a thousand pieces of artwork today is delightful! And the extra hugs are wonderful! But, don’t clean your room TODAY, just because it’s Mother’s Day and every other day of the year, well…….it’s a mess!
The other thing that hit me….it’s not always a day of joy! Today is extremely painful for some. Those that have experienced loss, infertility, no opportunity….. It might be a day of mixed emotions for some…..the children that have a bonus mom, the mom of the children with the bonus mom, the mom of children whose father doesn’t acknowledge her, the bonus mom, those that have lost their mom…….. I’m pretty sure I’ve had all the feelings today…..
For today, I wish ALL Mother’s Women a very Happy Mother’s Day!!!!! Enjoy your day. Take advantage of the pampering and spoiling. To the men and kids….treat the women in your lives with respect and love EVERYDAY! Surprise them with that card or clean room when they least expect it!!!
